October 16: Raku Workshop

60.00

October 16 from 10 am - 3 pm at The Cedars.

In this high energy workshop, learn how to apply glaze and fire pottery in a raku kiln. You will get to choose from a number of different shapes - bowls, cups, turtles! and more. You’ll glaze your chosen pieces and then learn how to place them in the kiln, how to know when they’re done, how to create the optimal post-firing reduction atmosphere (make great blacks and cracks), and how to clean them up for show!

Inspired by Japanese pottery traditions, raku is an immediate and engaging way to fire pottery. Google ‘raku’ for more ideas than you can imagine!

If you already do pottery, bring 8-10 pieces of bisqued work. I recommend items that are not very fragile, as the raku process involves lots of handling of the work, and extreme temperature variations.

Please wear close toed shoes and comfortable all natural fibre clothing (much safer around the hot kiln) that you are okay with possibly damaging (it’s not likely, but better safe than sorry).

All skill levels welcome.
All materials and tools are included in the cost of the workshop. Bring your own lunch and water bottle!
