Who We Are

We are a collective of makers, artists, and creative women (and some men too).  We are brought together by a common desire to know ourselves and live our lives better through art.  And we are inspired by the joy of sharing that with other people like you!  If you'd like to be part of the collective, drop us an email letting us know why!  makers@beetlebarrow.ca

Chandra Rice, Founder and Fearless Leader

I have the joy of making (and teaching) art for a living.  I work with fibre, clay, wood, and glass to create pieces that speak to my journey as a woman.   I have the pleasure of exhibiting my work across Canada and internationally, and am proud to identify myself as a professional multidisciplinary artist (getting to the point where I can say that with comfort, let alone pride, has been a large part of my journey to date).  You can visit chandrarice.ca to learn more about my art practice, and read my blog to learn more about my journey.

In the fall of 2017, I fulfilled a dream of mine and moved to The Cedars (our family cottage) full time, so that I could more easily dedicate myself to my art and to BeetleBarrow Studios.

Through BeetleBarrow Studios, I have the pleasure of sharing my love of making with others.  I am the primary instructor and facilitator for each of the retreats that we offer, and am always excited to meet the incredible people who join us each year.  Hopefully we'll see you at The Cedars this year!

OUR HISTORY

In the beginning, it was just the two of us!

In the beginning, it was just the two of us!

BeetleBarrow Studios started as a partnership of a couple of women who were artists and makers. Chandra lived in Hamilton and Lindsay lived in Beamsville, Ontario.

Shortly after they met in 2010, they started to make books together: Japanese Stab, Western, Coptic, Quilted, Accordion...you get the idea.  It was inspiring to work together.  They shared their paper stashes, and various techniques, and any ideas they had... and it opened a whole new realm of possibility for each of them.  Then Lindsay showed Chandra how to quilt, and there was no stopping them.  And thus BeetleBarrow was born.

"BeetleBarrow" because they inherited their love of making beautiful and wonderful things from their mothers, grandmothers, and other strong women in their lives. Thank you Mmes. Beadle and Leatherbarrow whose names they took to honour all of you.

Since those halcyon days, Lindsay has moved on to new adventures, but Chandra continues to work with an amazing collective of awesome women to bring you each year's selection of retreats and workshops.
